How to Choose a Phone Case: A Practical Guide

Most people buy a phone case twice: once in a hurry, and once properly after the first one disappoints them. This guide is meant to save you the first purchase.

Start with how you drop your phone

It sounds odd, but it decides everything else. A phone that slips off a desk lands flat and needs a raised lip around the screen and camera. A phone that falls from a hand at walking height lands on a corner, and corners are what reinforced bumpers protect. If your phone mostly lives in a bag with keys, scratch resistance matters more than either.

The materials, and what each is actually good at

• Silicone — grippy and soft, absorbs a knock well, and the most forgiving in a pocket. It attracts lint and can stretch over time.
• Hard plastic (polycarbonate) — thin, keeps the phone's shape, and holds printed designs sharply. On its own it passes shock straight through to the phone, so look for one with a softer inner layer.
• Clear TPU — shows the phone's own colour, which is the point of buying a colour you liked. Be aware that cheap clear cases yellow with sunlight and heat; that is the material ageing, not dirt.
• Leather and fabric — the nicest in the hand and the least protective at the corners. A good choice for a phone that lives in a pocket, a poor one for a building site.

Thickness is a trade, not a virtue

A thicker case protects more and makes the phone harder to hold, which is itself a cause of drops. A case around 1.5–2mm is the usual sweet spot: enough to absorb a fall, thin enough that the phone still feels like your phone. Rugged cases make sense if you work outdoors or hand your phone to children.

The two lips that matter

Run your finger over the front edge and the camera surround. Both should sit slightly proud of the glass. That raised edge is what keeps the screen and lenses off the ground when the phone lands face-down, and it costs nothing — yet plenty of cases skip it.

Fit is model-specific, not brand-specific

Cases are cut for one model. An iPhone 15 case will not fit an iPhone 15 Pro: the camera openings and the button positions differ. Check the exact model on the back of your phone, or in Settings, before ordering. Every case we sell lists the models it fits.
