Making a Phone Case Last: Cleaning, Yellowing and When to Replace
A case is a consumable. It takes the damage your phone does not, and eventually it stops being able to. Knowing when that point arrives is worth more than any cleaning tip.
Why clear cases turn yellow
It is not dirt, and no amount of scrubbing will reverse it. Clear TPU reacts to ultraviolet light and heat — sunlight through a car window is the usual cause — and the material itself changes colour. You can slow it by keeping the phone out of direct sun and off hot surfaces, but every clear case yellows eventually. If that bothers you, a tinted or patterned case will look the same in a year as it does today.
Cleaning, without ruining the case
- Take the phone out first. Always.
- Warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, and a soft brush — an old toothbrush is ideal for the corners and the camera edge.
- Rinse and let it dry completely before putting the phone back. A damp case traps moisture against the phone.
Avoid alcohol, acetone and bleach: they dull the finish on printed cases and make silicone brittle. Avoid a hot hairdryer, which warps the shape.
When to replace it
Replace the case when:
- a corner has split or gone permanently soft — that corner no longer absorbs anything;
- it has lost its grip on the phone and slides off when you pull it from a pocket;
- the raised lip around the screen or camera has worn flat;
- it has already taken a serious fall. A case that saved your phone once has usually spent itself doing it.
